New York Moments
Seen in Manhattan:
The fabulous Ed Ruscha exhibits at the fabulous Whitney;
Tall buildings;
Not one famous person;
Taxis (but not for Suzy!);
But that's OK - she's shopping in the Village (including a pink wig!);
A tree grows in Manhattan;
Better be careful! (the entrance to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel); and

The "tall buildings" and "taxis" shots look like they include the Staples I go to on Park and 56th. The Swissotel, the Drake is right where the pictures look to be taken. Near there on Park and 53rd is the incomparable (at least until you go to Chicago and see its twin) Seagram building designed by Mies van der Rohe with its wide plaza, twin fountains and the Four Seasons restaurant. Kitty-corner from the Seagram Building is Level House, one of the first of the "International Style" glass buildings on Park, complete with a Noguchi sculpture. On 55th, between Madison and 5th is the St. Regis, which has a very nice classy bar and at 55th and 5th is the Peninsula with a rooftop bar with very nice views of the the City (you can see where my interests lie).

I will mention a couple things about taxis in NYC. On weekdays (and for many cabs on weekends also) "shift change occurs at 5PM. This means that beginning around 4PM, cabbies are trying to get to the places where they will change with another driver (there are often penalties for them being late to a change). I(n other words at that time there are fewwer cabs areound and fewer cabs wiiling to take you to places away from where they will be doing the switch. Morale -- try not to be looking for cabs around 4:30. Thursdays and Fridays are the busiest weekday evenings because people go out on those nights. There are some usu. good places to get cabs which I have learned by long painful experience, but I don't want to give away my secrets, except that around rush hour, many people are taking cabs to Grand Central to get on trains for the commute to Westchester -- many fewer people usually are taking cabs from GC at that time. Park Ave. in the 50s is not a good place to get a cab at peak times, and if you get a cab on Madison below the 50s, be prepared for a trip north a little ways because turns are prohibitted in many place on Mad. Ave. The Village, near Central Park an places where there are a lot of people from out of town, in general, are not good places to look for cabs. One consolation: it's actually one of the easiest times in recent history to get a cab -- the fare hike, coupled with it being summer when more people walk and school is out (yes, some people cab their kids to school) make for what is for a New Yorker relatively easy cab pickings.
